Our Work

Empowerment

Empowerment

In recent years the scope of the Loomba Foundation’s work has been expanded to encompass empowerment of widows, based on the conviction that helping widows to be economically independent is the best route to a dignified and sustainable existence for themselves and their families. This is reflected in many of our international projects, including those delivered with our partner NGOs.

Kenya, Uganda, Syria, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka
In 2007, the Foundation became a global partner with the Prince of Wales’ overseas charity Youth Business International to empower young widows by supporting them in establishing small businesses.

Rwanda
The Loomba Foundation and Oxfam GB are working with the City of Kigali to establish a partnership programme to enrich and empower the lives of widows of the genocide, through a range of self-help initiatives. The Loomba Foundation and Oxfam GB are also delivering a successful partnership programme with the Kotaburu Women’s Co-operative, realising opportunities for widows to increase their income in the agricultural market.

Malawi
In 2009, the Loomba Foundation started a new project in association with the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women and SolarAid in Malawi and Kenya. Through this important partnership we work with rural communities in both countries to use solar power to fight poverty and climate change.
