The Coronavirus and the Status of our Widow & Education Programmes

,

The Loomba Foundation, like many organisations around the world, has been adversely affected by the coronavirus. More importantly, the widows we are trying to help are not getting the assistance they need. If anything, their plight is even worse as they have no access to the programmes and assistance we offer, and many have little to no hope.

All our programmes are in India where the situation with the virus is now very severe. India is now the country with the 2nd most coronavirus cases in the world and has the 3rd highest total of deaths.

With regards to our current programmes and future plans, here’s a summary of their progress and status:

Rotary India Literacy Mission (RILM) partnership

Aim

A partnership project with RILM to provide skills training to widows in India. The project is running in 5 states to empower 5,000 widows in total.

Progress

We have launched projects in 5 different states to support 1,000 widows per state. The projects were postponed in March 2020 due to the Coronavirus.

Status

At the moment there are no plans to resume this programme until it is safe to do so.

Progress

So far the children at this school have completed 2 years and we are committed to support them for a total of 5 years.

This program has been postponed until further notice. Bihar is unfortunately, one of the states in India that has been severely affected by the virus.

Ahmedabad Widow Empowerment project

This project was launched to make the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birthday and consists of empowering 150 widows in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Under this project 150 widows will receive three months training in cutting and tailoring in collaboration with the Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA).

Progress

So far 25 widows have completed the training.

Status

This project is on hold due to coronavirus. It may restart next month either mid-month (October 2020) or at the end of the month but there is no official confirmation at the moment.

To provide skills training for 5,000 widows in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir.

Progress

This programme was due to be launched in June 2020 on International Widows Day but has been postponed due to the coronavirus

Status

A new launch date has been set for 23rd June 2021. We are still fundraising for this project so we can reach our target of providing skills training to 5,000 widows.

We are doing everything we can do to resume our programmes but only when it is safe to do so. The safety of the widows we support and their families are our utmost priority.

We will provide further updates when there are any new developments.
